Dallas Mavericks Eyeing Trade Options, Including Andrew Wiggins

According to Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer, the Dallas Mavericks are actively exploring trade options, and one name on their radar is Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins. Fischer also reported that the Mavs are considering other potential targets, including Pascal Siakam from the Toronto Raptors, P.J. Washington from the Charlotte Hornets, and Dorian Finney-Smith from the Brooklyn Nets.

Siakam Off the Table

In the case of Pascal Siakam, it appears that Dallas may have missed out, as ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Raptors have agreed to trade him to the Indiana Pacers.

Wiggins’ Value and Performance Considerations

The potential interest in Andrew Wiggins might be surprising to some, considering his current performance and contract situation. Wiggins, at 28, is averaging 11.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 36 games this season. His three-point shooting has dipped to 29.6 percent, a career low and a significant drop from the previous season’s 39.6 percent. Wiggins is also in the first year of a four-year, $109 million extension with the Golden State Warriors.

Challenges in Wiggins’ Trade Value

Marc J. Spears of Andscape reported on NBA Today that one general manager mentioned there’s “not a lot of value for Wiggins right now.” The sizable contract he signed with Golden State initially seemed like a good deal for both parties but may now pose a challenge in potential trades.

Mavs’ Playoff Aspirations

With a 24-17 record and sitting fifth in the Western Conference, the Mavericks have shown improvement compared to the previous season. However, they are actively seeking reinforcements to bolster their roster for a deep playoff run.

Considering Alternatives

While Wiggins might be a consideration, the Dallas Mavericks could potentially explore more favorable value plays in pursuing players like P.J. Washington or Dorian Finney-Smith, both offering a combination of performance and contract terms that could better align with Dallas’s goals. The trade deadline will likely bring more clarity on the Mavs’ roster moves as they aim to enhance their playoff prospects.
